Short answer: if you spar regularly with real contact, buy a baselit saber, not a neopixel one. Our S-RGB configuration is the most resilient thing we sell and it still has smooth swing. Order a 32 inch blade unless you fight indoors or spin, in which case order 26.
That contradicts most of the guides you will find on this query, including some written by people who sell sabers. Here is the reasoning, and the honest limits of it.
Why most dueling guides get this wrong
Search "best saber for dueling" and you will mostly get lists of neopixel sabers. Neopixel is what everyone wants to sell, because it looks spectacular and it carries a higher price.
The physical reality:
- A baselit blade is a hollow polycarbonate tube. There is nothing inside it to break.
- A neopixel blade has an LED strip running its entire length, plus the wiring and connector that drive it.
Both use combat-grade polycarbonate. Both are rated for contact. But under heavy, repeated, full-contact use, one of them has considerably more inside it to damage.
This is not a criticism of neopixel. It is the trade you are making, and you should make it knowingly.
The honest recommendation by use case

Most people who say they want to duel actually fall into row two. Be honest with yourself about how often you will really spar.
What makes a saber duel-ready
Blade material and wall thickness
Combat-grade polycarbonate, not acrylic and not thin-wall tube. Polycarbonate flexes and absorbs; acrylic shatters. If a listing does not say polycarbonate, assume it is not.
Hilt material
Machined aluminium. A resin or printed hilt will not survive being struck, and in a spar the hilt gets struck.
Blade retention
A blade that works loose mid-swing is genuinely dangerous. Retention screws matter more than anyone writes about.
Internal chassis
A reinforced, removable chassis means the electronics are held rigidly and can be serviced. Loose internals rattle themselves apart under repeated impact.
Blade diameter
Our hilts take either a 1 inch or a 7/8 inch blade, and the hilt determines which. A 1 inch blade is the thicker section of the two. If you have a choice and durability is your priority, the wider blade is the more substantial one — though in practice most blade failures come from thrusts into hard floors rather than from parries, and that is true at either diameter.

If you have read all of the above and still want pixel, this is the one. Balanced, well built, and rated for contact. Just understand you are choosing looks over longevity, and that is a legitimate choice. See the Starbreaker (Black).
Blade length for dueling
32 inch is the standard adult dueling length. It is what most sparring conventions and choreography are built around, so you will match everyone else's spacing and timing.
- 26 inch — indoor sparring, spinning, tight choreography, dual wielding, shorter wielders. Noticeably faster to change direction.
- 32 inch — the default. Order this if unsure.
- 36 inch — reach and presence. Harder to control and it will punish sloppy technique.

What will still break, whatever you buy
Nobody publishes this, so here it is.
- Blades scuff. Every duelled blade develops white stress marks. This is normal and is not a defect.
- Hilts mark. Anodising chips where blades meet. Some people consider this the point.
- Blade tips take the worst of it. Thrusts into the floor kill more blades than any parry.
- Retention screws loosen. Check them. It takes ten seconds and prevents the only genuinely dangerous failure.
None of the above is covered by any manufacturer's warranty, including ours. Warranties cover manufacturing defects, not use.
Where we lose: you cannot duel with a saber that has not arrived
Clubs and sparring groups tend to buy on a deadline — a session next weekend, a class starting, a friend who wants to join in. We are badly suited to that. Your saber is built after you order, so it ships in 14–21 business days and arrives 7–10 days after that.
Nsabers publish "2–4 business days" to ship and state their sabers are "engineered for full-contact dueling". If you need something to spar with this month, that is the more sensible purchase and we would rather say so.
Where the wait pays off is the second saber. Once you know whether you want baselit or pixel, 26 or 32, you order exactly that instead of the closest thing in stock.
Common questions
Can you actually duel with a neopixel saber?
Yes. Ours are combat-grade polycarbonate and rated for contact. The question is not whether you can, it is how often, and how hard.
Are baselit sabers dimmer?
Slightly brighter at the base and slightly less even along the length. On its own, in a dark room, a good baselit blade looks excellent. Side by side with pixel, you will see the difference.
Do baselit sabers have smooth swing?
Ours do. Smooth swing is a function of the soundboard and motion sensor, not the blade type.
Is a heavier saber better for dueling?
No. Heavier means slower recovery and more fatigue. Balance matters more than mass.
How long does a duel saber last?
The blade is the consumable. Hilts and electronics outlast blades comfortably.
What happens after you order
Orders ship within 14–21 business days. Once shipped, delivery takes a further 7–10 days, in the US and internationally. Shipping within the US is free; international is a flat $50.
Returns are free for 30 days. If it is not right, you will not pay to send it back to us. The saber needs to come back unused and undamaged in its original packaging, and you email us first so we can send you a prepaid label and instructions. Every saber carries a one-year warranty against manufacturing defects.
