Short answer: buy an SNV4 Pixel saber with a 32 inch blade, somewhere between $175 and $360. Do not buy Proffie for your first saber. Do not overthink the hilt. You will learn what you actually care about by owning one, and nothing you read first will teach you that.

Why SNV4 and not Proffie
This is the decision beginners get wrong most often, usually because a forum told them Proffie is "better".
Proffie is not better looking. On the same blade, SNV4 and Proffie look very close to identical. Proffie's advantage is that it is open — you can install any sound font, write your own blade styles, and edit configuration files directly.
The cost of that is time. Proffie has a genuine learning curve. If you never intend to open a config file, you have paid $50 to $70 for capability you will not use.
Start on SNV4. If you find yourself a year in wanting to write your own blade styles, buy a Proffie saber then, with a much better idea of what you want. Plenty of people take exactly that path and none of them regret it.

A genuine full-length pixel blade at $175. Simpler hilt, plainer finish, and that is exactly where the money was saved. Not a compromised saber, a plainer one.

Five things beginners get wrong
1. Buying Proffie first
Covered above. It is the single most common overspend in this hobby.
2. Buying a 36 inch blade because longer sounds better
A 36 inch blade puts more mass further from your hand. Every direction change takes more force and more time, and it will punish a sloppy wrist. Order 32.
3. Choosing based on blade colour
Every board we sell changes colour. Choosing a saber by the colour in the product photo is like choosing a phone by its wallpaper.
4. Assuming neopixel is best for dueling
It is not. A pixel blade carries an LED strip inside it; a baselit blade is a hollow tube. If you will spar weekly with real contact, buy baselit. See best saber for dueling.
5. Not checking the delivery window before ordering
Build-to-order sellers, us included, take weeks. Stock sellers take days. Neither is wrong; buying the wrong one for your deadline is.

Your first week

- Read the manual for the button sequences. Every board handles colour change and font change differently and guessing is frustrating.
- Check the blade retention screw before any swinging. Ten seconds, prevents the only genuinely dangerous failure.
- Swing it somewhere with space. Ceiling fans and light fittings have ended more first days than duels have.
- Use the kill switch if you are storing it for a while.
Where we lose: this is a bad first saber if you are impatient
A first saber is usually an impulse. You watched something, you want one, you want it now. We are the opposite of that — yours is built after you order, so it ships in 14–21 business days and arrives 7–10 days later.
If it is a gift with a date on it, or you have just decided you want one this weekend, buy from a seller holding stock. Nsabers publish "2–4 business days" to ship.
The reason to wait, specifically as a first-time buyer: our returns are free for 30 days, we send the prepaid label, and there is no restocking fee. When you do not yet know what you want, being able to send it back at zero cost is worth more than getting it a fortnight sooner. Is a neopixel saber worth it for a beginner?
Yes, if you mostly want it to look extraordinary. No, if you mostly want to hit things with it.
How much should a first saber cost?
$175 to $360 covers it. Above roughly $300 you are paying for machining and finish, not performance — the board in a $499 hilt is the same board as in a $175 one.
Can a child use one?
These are machined aluminium and are not toys. Treat them as adult objects. For younger or smaller users a 26 inch blade is considerably more manageable.
Do I need to know anything technical?
Not on SNV4. Charge it, turn it on, use it. That is the point of choosing SNV4 first.
What if I choose wrong?
Send it back within 30 days, unused and in its packaging, and we pay the postage.
What happens after you order
Orders ship within 14–21 business days. Once shipped, delivery takes a further 7–10 days, in the US and internationally. Shipping within the US is free; international is a flat $50.
Returns are free for 30 days. If it is not right, you will not pay to send it back to us. The saber needs to come back unused and undamaged in its original packaging, and you email us first so we can send you a prepaid label and instructions. Every saber carries a one-year warranty against manufacturing defects.
