What Does a Yellow Lightsaber Mean?

StarForged Guard SE, black and white pike-proportioned saber hilt with gold ring detailing

Short answer: in current canon, yellow marks the Jedi Temple Guards — and nothing else is confirmed. The popular explanation, that yellow belongs to the "Jedi Sentinel" class, comes from a 2010 Legends sourcebook that hedged it even then, and is not canon. Rey ends The Rise of Skywalker with a yellow blade and Lucasfilm has never explained why.

So this is a short answer with a long tail of invented ones. Here is what is documented, what is Legends, and what people simply made up.

The one canon association: the Temple Guards

The Star Wars Databank's entry on the Jedi Temple Guard says they:

"carried imposing lightsaber pikes — thick, double-bladed weapons that produced a rare and distinctive yellow blade."

Two things to notice. The Databank calls yellow rare and distinctive — it does not say what the colour signifies. And the Guards are the clearest canon example, not the only one.

Behind the scenes, the choice was late and practical: by fan-wiki accounts, the pikes in The Clone Wars episode "The Wrong Jedi" (2013) were originally planned with green blades and changed to yellow during production. We could not find a primary production source for that, so treat it as secondary rather than documented.

Rey's yellow blade, and the answer nobody has

At the end of The Rise of Skywalker, Rey ignites a yellow-bladed saber she built herself. It is the most-asked question about the colour, and the honest answer is that no official source explains it.

You will find articles confidently telling you it signals a new kind of Jedi, a Sentinel, a Temple Guard lineage, or balance restored. Every one of those is the writer's own reading. Some of them are good readings. None is sourced.

Where "Sentinel" actually comes from

The Guardian / Consular / Sentinel class names come from the Wizards of the Coast Star Wars Roleplaying Game. The yellow pairing comes from The Jedi Path: A Manual for Students of the Force (2010). Both are Legends. Most people credit Knights of the Old Republic (2003), which uses the classes but never ties a colour to any of them.

And the book everyone is unknowingly quoting hedges it. Its line is that Sentinel blades "usually produced a yellow blade" — and on the matching claim for Guardians it says blue was common "though it is not a requirement." Even inside the material that invented the chart, it is a tendency, not a rule.

If someone tells you your yellow saber means you are a Sentinel, they are quoting a sixteen-year-old Legends manual, not Star Wars canon.

Who else carries yellow

Wielder Where Status
Jedi Temple Guards The Clone Wars, lightsaber pikes Canon
Rey The Rise of Skywalker, final scene Canon, unexplained
Bastila Shan Knights of the Old Republic Legends

You may also read that Asajj Ventress carried a yellow blade and acquired it in a particular way. We looked for a primary source and could not confirm the account that circulates, so we are not repeating it.

Buying yellow: what actually matters

Yellow is not a product. It is a setting. Every pixel saber we make — SNV4 or Proffie — gives you a colour wheel on the hilt, and yellow is on it. A baselit SD-RGB saber steps through a fixed palette, and yellow is usually in that set, but check your manual rather than assuming.

There is one genuine technical point in yellow's favour, and it is the opposite of the purple problem. Yellow is produced by mixing red and green, both of which addressable LEDs do strongly. It reads bright, it holds its colour on camera, and it is one of the easier colours for a pixel blade to render convincingly.

If you want the Temple Guard look specifically

The Guards carried a double-bladed pike. Both of our sentinel hilts borrow its proportions rather than its second blade, which is worth being plain about before you order:

  • Guard SE — $199 baselit, $275 SNV4 Pixel, $325 Proffie. A pike-proportioned hilt built around a two-handed hold, about 11.75 inches, on a 1-inch blade.
  • The Silent Vow — $449 baselit up to $625 in Proffie. The fuller version in polished aluminium, 13 to 14 inches, on a 7/8-inch blade.

Both ship with one blade, not two. They take the pike's long, straight proportion and its two-handed grip, and they arrive as single-bladed sabers — one blade, no coupler, no second emitter. If you want a blade at each end, the honest answer is a purpose-built staff. TSK-A07 DB at $100 baselit is the cheapest we make, and Menace at $259 is two hilts and a connector with two blades in the box.

All of them ship colour-configurable, so the yellow is yours to set, adjust or abandon.

Where we lose

We do not make a Rey hilt from the final film. If the yellow blade you want is specifically that saber, we do not build it and we would rather say so than steer you toward something adjacent.

We do not make an actual double-bladed pike, and our own site used to imply we did. Guard SE was filed under double-bladed until we caught it writing this guide; both sentinel hilts now say plainly that one blade is included. If a lit blade at each end on a pike-proportioned hilt is what you are after, nothing in our range does it, and we would rather tell you that than sell you the silhouette.

Our listings do not state which colours are preloaded on each board. For a baselit saber, where the palette is fixed, that genuinely matters. Ask us before you order and we will tell you what is on the configuration you are looking at.

Common questions

What does a yellow lightsaber mean?

In canon, it is the colour carried by the Jedi Temple Guards, described as "rare and distinctive." No meaning beyond that is stated. The Sentinel association comes from The Jedi Path (2010), a Legends sourcebook, which says only that Sentinel blades "usually" came out yellow.

Why is Rey's lightsaber yellow?

Nobody official has said. It is the most confidently answered question on the internet and the least sourced. Any explanation you read — including ours, if we offered one — would be interpretation.

Does yellow mean a Jedi Sentinel?

Only as a tendency, and only inside Legends. The pairing is from The Jedi Path (2010), which says Sentinel blades "usually" produced yellow. Knights of the Old Republic uses the class names but never ties a colour to any of them, and none of it is current canon.

Who used yellow lightsabers?

In canon: the Jedi Temple Guards, and Rey at the end of The Rise of Skywalker. In Legends, Bastila Shan among others.

Is yellow a rare lightsaber colour?

The Databank calls the Temple Guards' blade "rare and distinctive," so yes by canon's own description — though black, held by a single weapon, is rarer still.

Can I set my saber to yellow?

Yes. Every pixel saber gives you a full wheel, and yellow is typically in the fixed palette on baselit boards too. Yellow is also one of the better colours for a pixel blade, since it mixes from red and green rather than sitting at the edge of the LED's range.

Which hilt suits a yellow blade?

For the canon association, a pike-proportioned hilt: Guard SE from $199 or The Silent Vow from $449 — both single-bladed, despite the pike styling. For an actual blade at each end, TSK-A07 DB from $100. Otherwise yellow suits dark and weathered hilts well, because the contrast is strong.

Where to start

The full picture, colour by colour and with each claim marked canon or not, is in what does each lightsaber colour mean. The colour with the most invented lore attached is covered in why are some lightsabers purple. For how the colour change works on each board, see the colour guide.

Everything colour-configurable is on Neopixel Sabers, and the staff builds mentioned above also appear on Duel-Ready Sabers in their baselit configuration.

What happens after you order with us

Returns are free for 30 days. If it is not right, you will not pay to send it back to us. The saber needs to come back unused and undamaged in its original packaging, and you email us first so we can send you a prepaid label and instructions. Every saber carries a one-year warranty against manufacturing defects.

The Temple Guard description is quoted from the Star Wars Databank. The Sentinel colour association is from The Jedi Path: A Manual for Students of the Force (2010) and is Legends; the class names themselves come from the Wizards of the Coast Star Wars Roleplaying Game. The green-to-yellow production change rests on fan-wiki reporting only, and we have labelled it as such. Where we could not verify a widely repeated claim — including the account of Ventress's yellow blade — we have left it out rather than repeat it. Prices are our own live prices as of 1 October 2026.
